1994 Paintings
Wayne Theibaud came to see one of my shows in the East Village (at Helio) and said kind things about my work, so when the East Village went bust, I approached Allan Stone Gallery, because Allan represented Wayne. Allan was the definition of Old School. He didn’t look at slides, but any painter could walk in off the street and show their work to Joan (his long-time receptionist). If she thought Allan would like it, she would set up an appointment with ALLAN STONE (this man was a legendary dealer and collector - one of the most widely respected in the business). Having Wayne Theibaud as a calling card, I was feeling pretty confidant, so I brought 10 of the series below to show to Joan. She set up the appointment. I brought the other 20 along to meet Allan. He personally bought 14 of them on the spot. He went on to sell all kinds of my stuff. Got me into lots of big collections. Perhaps luckily, I had dropped the RED TF thing by then, as well as the black and white frame. I think I was trying to be a little bit more friendly. It’s lonely on the mountaintop.
