1998 Can’t Put It Down

When I first approached Allan Stone Gallery he was still in his original location, second floor of a two-story walk-up. One couldn’t go there without feeling like you were living history. There was so much expensive art piled up everywhere, it was hard to tell what the show was. It was only a few years later that he closed to relocate to what had been an old firehouse just off of Park Ave. Gorgeous gallery.

I was his biggest client’s favorite artist and sales were rolling along. Having a retired wife and a small adopted daughter, you’d think I’d be happy to leave well enough alone.

Not me. I remember feeling like I was missing out on my life’s purpose and that I had to make a move to get back on track.

I created the series below, brought them to the gallery for Allan to see. I never got to have the conversation with Allan, but he did accept them into inventory. It wasn’t too long after that he had health problems which led to his retirement.

I was glad that I got to make this statement, that this is who I am and it’s important.
