"Proper Perspective"

This Show

In this show, I wanted to show you how my work grows.

I’ve selected five paintings, covering fifteen years of my development. They are:

“Proper Perspective” (the one with The Empire State Building) – 1987

“Vigilance in Defense of Ideals” (the lion in front of NYC’s Main Library) – 1994

“Somber” (the piece with the heavy wood frame) – 1998

“Chrysler Building” (um, the Chrysler Building) – 2000

“Pursuit” (small painting with cropped figures) – 2001

What you will notice is that, as the years progress, the speed of the painting slows down.

“Proper Perspective” (the earliest painting here) is an impressionist painting. Impressionist painting is about capturing a moment - an impression – which the early impressionists had to do quickly, as they were working outside and the light is always changing.

Impressionist painting is fast. You can see the speed in the brushstroke – wet paint on wet paint. No time to let anything dry. This painting probably took me five days.

“Pursuit” (the most recent in this show) though much smaller than “Proper Perspective”, probably took me about fifteen days to complete.

This painting has seven or eight complete coats of paint – any one of which is much more involved than the completed “Proper Perspective”. I’m looking into things much more deeply here. Look at the shadowed foreground. The color changes every fraction of an inch. There’s a whole world of things going on in there.

But you can’t really see such qualities in passing. To appreciate the greater depth, you have to spend a long time in contemplation.

That’s why I refer to the recent work as being slow. They have much more to say – and so require greater amounts of time and thought in order to see.

But all the paintings have a lot to say.

I guess the only real difference is: do you want to have give-and-take with the thirty-five-year-old me? Or the forty-eight-year-old variety?

The thirty-five-year-old me is much more energetic - but the forty-eight-year-old is a lot more organized, patient and deep.

If interested, the price of this work is as follows:

“Proper Perspective” $5,000

“Vigilance in Defense of Ideals” $2,600

“Somber” $5,200

“Chrysler Building” $5,200

“Pursuit” $3,000

I’ll write more about each of these paintings, and put those writings in a binder along with my resume of shows and a couple other writings. Ask for it, if you don’t see it lying around.

There should also be a few copies of my catalogue from a show in Japan, to read or purchase if you’d like.

You are most welcome to visit my studio, anytime, by appointment. I’d be honored to meet you. Purchase is not necessary. My apartment is located at the top of Manhattan, a few blocks from The George Washington Bridge. I live and work in the same place – so my schedule is very flexible.

I’d like to add here a special Thank You to Christina and Joanna for inviting me to exhibit at 'Sanctuary Cafe' – and to Renee for making this connection – and to Marlana for working on my press release.

I hope you enjoy viewing my paintings and reading my words.

I deeply appreciate your interest.

Sincerely,
