NEW YORKER IN JAPAN

TOKYO

Whenever I travel, the first thing that I notice is that which is different than where I live. One of those things in Tokyo would be all the wires suspended in the sky over the streets. In New York City, all the wires are underground.

Esthetically, I find the convergence of so many dissecting lines to be visually exciting. They look like abstract paintings in the sky.

On an internal level, the wires symbolize how I view Japanese society: extremely complex, yet highly organized.

Balancing that impression, I have chosen a traffic signal. Red, yellow and green. Simplicity. Contrasting all the complexity, Japan often reminds me of a nation of children in that the role of each individual seems to be so clearly defined.

"Do this; don't do that."
